Latest transfer rumours. Today, Manchester United close in on Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay and Tottenham eye a move for £9m-rated striker Christian Benitez.

Benfica Ezequiel Garay

With the summer transfer window set to re-open, there is plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Manchester United close in on Ezequiel Garay and Tottenham eye a move for Christian Benitez.

United close on Garay

First up and the Mirror are reporting that Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay with a £17m deal understood to be close to completion.

The report claims that United have had the centre-back extensively scouted over the last few months and new boss David Moyes is believed to be keen on pushing ahead with a move for his predecessors target.

Garay has enjoyed another impressive season at the back for Benfica but his time in Portugal could now be coming to an end with the Mirror suggesting his representatives are in deep negotiations over a move to Old Trafford with United understood to be close to agreeing terms over a £17m move.

Spurs eye Benitez

Next up and the Daily Mail are reporting that Tottenham Hotspur are weighing up a £9 million move for Ecuador striker Christian Benitez.

The 27-year-old endured a difficult season in the Premier League when he managed just 3 goals in 30 games for Birmingham City back in 2009 but he’s since rediscovered his goal-scoring touch in the Mexican top flight, scoring 70 goals in 114 games over the past three seasons.

The Mail claim Spurs are on the look-out for another striker this summer and are one of several teams considering a move for the £9m-rated forward with the president of his current team – Club America – confirming the north Londoners interest. Ricardo Pelaez told the newspaper:

‘There could be a good offer for Christian from Tottenham.

‘I’ve spoken with him and he wants to return to Europe. We won’t clip his wings if we get an offer that suits us.

‘Of course there are bids for him — he has been the league’s top scorer three times, after all.

‘He is a great guy and a magnificent player. He is under contract but we’ll look to see what is the best option.’
