Some interesting news today Manchester United fans with talkSPORT reporting that the club have reached an agreement with Benfica over the signing of defender Ezequiel Garay.
The report claims that the champions have been tracking the 26-year-old for several months but looked set to miss out on his signature after speculation suggested the centre-back was set to rejoin former club Real Madrid after reportedly buying a house in the Spanish capital.
However, talkSPORT now cite reports emanating from Portuguese newspaper Record who claim that United have now struck a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ to sign Garay this summer for a fee believed to be in the region of £17m.
New manager David Moyes secured his first signing of the summer earlier this week after confirming the arrival of versatile left-back Guillermo Varela and it seems he’s set to further strengthen his defensive options with the signing of Garay.
The report claims Madrid will be owed 50% of any transfer fee after placing a sell-on clause in his contract when they sold the 6ft 4in stopper in 2011 after a three year spell at the Bernabeu that saw him only make 25 appearances.
While his time in Spain may have been disappointing, the Argentinean international has found his form with Benfica and has established himself as one of the best centre-backs in Europe and it appears he’ll be plying his trade in the Premier League next season.
