Gonzalo Higuain’s proposed move to Arsenal has edged ever closer today with Sky Bet one of several bookmakers to suspend betting on the Real Madrid man moving to the Emirates after reports claimed the striker had agreed personal terms to join the Gunners.

The Telegraph kicked things off late last night after reporting that Higuain was on the verge of making a £22m move to Arsenal after agreeing terms of around £130,000-a-week to move to north London this summer, with boss Arsene Wenger understood to be confident of sealing the deal before the club head of to the Far East early next month.

The move would not only break the Gunners strict wage structure but it would also smash the clubs current transfer record – set at the £15m we forked out for Andrey Arshavin back in 2009.

Several other newspapers followed suit and also reported the news and it seems this has resulted in an influx of bets backing Higuain to make the move to Arsenal, with Sky Bet announcing earlier that they had now been forced to stop taking bets on the 25-year-old’s next club after punters were backing him to join Arsenal at odds as short as 1/3.

Sky Bet Football Trader Chris Spicer told Sky Sports:

“The intensity of the betting and speculation suggesting Higuain is some way towards agreeing a deal has forced us to suspend betting on his next club.

“However, it remains to be seen whether Arsenal have the deal done or have just submitted a bid, as there will surely be competition for his services, with Juventus also backed to land the Argentina striker.”

After a slow start, the transfer window could be about to get interesting for Arsenal fans and I would love to see Higuain join the club this summer. But despite all the speculation and betting suspensions, nothing is official yet so let’s see how things develop over the coming days…
