Arsenal remain in the hunt to sign Wayne Rooney this summer despite agreeing a deal to sign Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain, but the Man Utd ace would prefer a move to Chelsea if he does leave Old Trafford, according to the Daily Mail.

The report claims the Gunners have finally joined the ‘big spenders’ after sealing a deal to sign Argentinean hitman Higuain, with the 25-year-old believed to have agreed a four-year contract worth around £150,000-a-week while a £22m fee with Madrid is all-but signed off.

The move is now awaiting the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti as Madrid boss before it will be officially rubber stamped, and the signing of Higuain will represent a huge shift in transfer policy for Arsenal with the move shattering the north Londoners previous transfer record – surpassing the £15m paid to Zenit St Petersburg for Andrey Arshavin in 2009.

But the spending may not stop there with the Mail claiming that boss Arsene Wenger is still keen on luring unsettled Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney to the Emirates this summer, despite the fact his £250,000-a-week wages are likely to prove a major stumbling block.

However, the newspaper suggests that should United decide to cash in this summer, Rooney’s preferred destination is Chelsea as he feels he’s more likely to fulfill his ambitions at Stamford Bridge and the Blues are far more capable of meeting his wage demands.

Former United supremo Sir Alex Ferguson revealed at the end of last season that Rooney had asked to leave the club this summer, but while the champions are understood to be keen on keeping hold of the 27-year-old, if he does end his nine-year stay in Manchester it looks like he could be heading to west, rather than north, London.

Personally, I think Rooney will end up staying at United but you never know in football, so it’s certainly worth keeping an eye on this one over the coming weeks….
