Manchester United Set To Table Improved £15m Defender Bid

Manchester United will make a new and improved £15m plus add-ons offer for Everton defender Leighton Baines in the coming days, according to the Daily Mail.

With the summer transfer window set to open, there is plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest Arsenal transfer rumours. Today, Manchester United are set to table a renewed bid for Leighton Baines.

Manchester United will make a new and improved £15million offer for Everton defender Leighton Baines in the coming days, according to the Daily Mail.

The champions saw their opening £12m bid rejected out of hand on Thursday with Everton insisting the left-back is not for sale this summer. However, the report claims David Moyes will go back in with a second offer of £15m plus performance-related add-ons for the 28-year-old, and a deal that could eventually hit £20m will surely be more tempting for the Toffees.

New Everton boss Roberto Martinez is desperate to keep hold of Baines and the Mail suggest the club are now planning on offering him a new contract worth £70,000-per-week in order to persuade him to remain at Goodison Park beyond this summer.

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright made the club’s position clear to Moyes when he made his enquiry and insists the Merseysiders want to hang on to the defender.

‘Leighton is under contract and I’ve told David not to come back for him, although there is nothing to stop him. He knows we want him to stay.’ Kenwright is quoted as saying by the Mail

However, Moyes remains a huge fan of the left-back – who he signed for Everton from Wigan Athletic back in 2007 – and a second offer is expected to go in soon. Baines has two years to run on his current contract so Everton may find themselves in a tricky situation if the defender refuses to sign a new deal this summer, and United’s £15m plus add-ons offer might look tempting as his value will drop next summer when he will only have 12 months remaining.

With the 2014 World Cup just around the corner, you’d be forgiven for thinking Baines would be keen to seal a move to Old Trafford to boost his chances of ousting Ashley Cole from the England starting eleven. This is certainly a transfer saga that could run and run, so we’ll keep you up-to-date on how things progress.
