Chelsea have made an official move for Edinson Cavani with the in-demand striker set to hold talks with Napoli to discuss his £54m asking price, according to Sky Sports News.

Cavani has become one of the world’s hottest properties after another excellent season in Italy that saw him score 38 goals in 43 games to help Napoli to a second place finish in Serie A. This red-hot form has seen him catch the attention of some of Europe’s heavy-weights with the report linking him with the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City, Real Madrid and PSG this summer.

City appeared to be the early front-runners but cooled their interest after Napoli refused to negotiate for anything less than the strikers £54m release clause, with the Italians president Aurelio De Laurentiis insisting the Eastlanders were the only club to submit an official bid.

Chelsea are also believed to be reluctant to pay his buy-out fee but Sky Sports News sources have indicated that the Europa League winners have now made an official approach for the Uruguayan hitman, although they fail to disclose the exact figure the Blues are believed to have tabled.

Cavani and his agents are now expected to hold talks with Napoli this week to discuss his price-tag and the 26-year-old made it clear on Sunday after the Confederations Cup defeat to Italy that he wanted his future resolved soon.

“I want to talk as soon as possible with president De Laurentiis.

“We must clear this (situation up) ourselves. I’ll talk with him, as it’s done between men, really soon.

“Right now, I’m at Napoli and I’m very proud to be there. If I leave one day, I’ll be ready to move to a bigger club. We’ll see.” Cavani is quoted as saying by Sky Sports

Will Cavani ask for Napoli to let him leave for less than his £54m release clause? Or is he prepared to miss out on a big-money move to remain in Naples? If the Serie A outfit do agree to lower the asking price, you’d expect the likes of City to renew their interest but it’s difficult to know how this is going to work out.

It will certainly be a major coup if Chelsea or City are able to land the prolific South American striker and I would personally love to see him in the Premier League next season. Let’s see how this one develops….
