Arsenal’s chances of signing Gonzalo Higuain have been dealt another blow after the striker claimed that Jose Mourinho wants to take him to Chelsea, according to the Daily Mail.

The Gunners have been strongly linked with the Argentinean hitman this summer and were thought to be close to securing a £23m deal earlier on this month. However, the transfer stalled when Real Madrid upped the asking price and reports on Wednesday claimed Arsenal’s chances of landing the prolific striker are fading fast with the Spanish champions were now demanding £37m after cash-rich Napoli entered the race.

Now it appears Arsene Wenger will have to fight off competition from London rivals Chelsea as well, with Higuain quoted as saying that new Blues boss Jose Mourinho wants to take him to Stamford Bridge this summer.

Mourinho insisted on Wednesday that his only priority this summer was to sign Wayne Rooney from Manchester United after the champions rejected their opening offer, but if the ‘Special One’ wants a new striker this summer it’s likely he’ll have fall-back options in case the Rooney deal fails to go through and it seems Higuain could be in his thoughts.

A move to Chelsea may surprise some though, considering the lack of first team football Higuain got under Mourinho last season at the Bernabeu. The 25-year-old only managed 16 goals, his lowest return in five years, and his lack of action prompted him to consider a move away from the Spanish capital in the first place so he’d be a brave man to link up with his former boss again in west London.
