Liverpool look set to hijack Tottenham’s move for Roberto Soldado after the north Londoners failed to agree a fee with Valencia, according to talkSPORT.

Spurs director of football, Franco Baldini, was in Spain on Monday holding talks with Valencia over the potential signing of the 28-year-old hitman. However, it’s believed he returned back to the UK after failing to agree a fee.

The Guardian suggest Spurs were unwilling to meet the Spanish international’s £26m release clause with Daniel Levy standing firm with his offer of £22m.

This impasse has now opened the door to Liverpool and talkSPORT claim the Merseysiders are set to hijack Tottenham’s move by agreeing to pay Valencia the full £26m asking price, with boss Brendan Rodgers understood to be keen to take Soldado to Anfield as a potential replacement for Luis Suarez – who is trying to force a move away this summer.

The news will no doubt come as a blow to Spurs, who looked set to snap up the prolific hitman after missing out on both David Villa and Christian Benteke already this summer.

Of course this is just speculation at this time and until anything official is released, anything can still happen. Spurs have already held talks with the player so they may still consider themselves as favourites for his signature, but with Liverpool seemingly prepared to pay the fee required to release him from his contract at Valencia, Soldado could be heading to Anfield, not White Hart Lane, this summer.
