Tottenham have been rocked by the news that Gareth Bale has told chairman Daniel Levy that he wants to talk with Real Madrid about a potential world record move to the Bernabeu, according to reports today.

Bale has been strongly linked with a move to the Spanish capital this summer with Madrid making public their interest in signing the Welshman in a deal that would be expected to surpass the £80m paid to Manchester United for Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Mirror are reporting today that the La Liga giants have warned the 24-year-old he’s being offered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and they will be forced to look elsewhere if a deal isn’t completed quickly.

The newspaper also suggests that Bale has now informed Levy that he wants to be given the opportunity to speak with Madrid about a potential move and will refuse to sign a new contract at White Hart Lane – although he will stop short of handing in an official transfer request.

Spurs have maintained all summer that Bale is not for sale but understandably this latest news has given Real further encouragement they will be able to pull-off a major coup this summer and they are ready to come back in with an improved bid having seen their opening offer of £51m in cash plus Angel Di Maria and Fabio Coentraou rejected by Spurs.

The Mirror also suggest that Manchester United are still keeping a close eye on things and are ready to make a move of their own should Tottenham decide to negotiate, but David Moyes will have a difficult task in trying to persuade Bale to turn down his dream move to Madrid.

It’s all gearing up to be an intriguing final few weeks of the summer transfer window and although Spurs appear determined to hang on to their star man, you wouldn’t put it past Madrid president Florintino Perez getting his man in the end.
