Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is ready to raid former club Real Madrid for £20m-rated midfielder Sami Khedira, according to reports today.
The Portuguese coach returned to Stamford Bridge this summer following a turbulent final year in charge at the Bernabeu that saw him fall-out with a large section of the Madrid dressing room. However, it’s believed Mourinho remained on good terms with Khedira and it appears he’s now ready to try and lure the 26-year-old to west London this summer.
Current defensive midfielder John Obi Mikel has been strongly linked with a move in recent weeks and the Mirror claim that Mourinho has identified Khedira as the ideal replacement, with the German international expected to find his place in the Madrid starting eleven come under serious threat next season following the £34m arrival of Spanish starlet Asier Illarramendi.
Chelsea have also considered Italian midfielder Daniele De Rossi but the newspaper suggests they would prefer to buy the younger Khedira and are ready to offer him a deal worth £4m-per-season and meet his £20m asking price.
If Chelsea are successful in bringing Khedira to the Bridge, he would become central to Mourinho’s new-look squad next season that will include the likes of Andre Schurrle, Romelu Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne and potentially Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.
