Gareth Bale has rocked Tottenham by formally telling boss Andre Villas-Boas that he wants to leave the club and join Real Madrid this summer, according to talkSPORT.

The Spaniards have been public with their desire to land the PFA Player of the Year this summer but Spurs have remained determined to hang on to their star man, with Levy and boss Andre Villas-Boas insisting Bale wasn’t for sale at any price.

Bale returned to training today after being given extra time off following the clubs pre-season tour of Asia and talkSPORT claim the 24-year-old held talks with boss Andre Villas-Boas where he formally asked to leave to join Real Madrid.

The former Southampton-mans request could now see Spurs soften their stance and enter negotiations with the Spanish giants. Reports in this mornings papers suggested Madrid were prepared to break the world transfer record in order to land the Welshman and Spurs may find that kind of offer hard to refuse now the player has confirmed his desire to leave.

While there has been no indication that Bale will submit a formal transfer request, no manager wants to keep hold of an unhappy player and if Tottenham are going to get in the region of £80m for him, it would make sense for them to cash in now and rebuild with the money the get in return.
