Liverpool Table Offer For Brazilian Striker But Arsenal Also Interested

Liverpool have submitted a formal offer for Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa but could yet face competition for his signature from league rivals Arsenal.

With the summer transfer window now open, there is plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Liverpool are believed to have tabled a bid for a striker.

Liverpool have submitted a formal offer for Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa but could yet face competition for his signature from rivals Arsenal, according to talkSPORT.

Costa has just come off the back of an excellent season in Spain that saw him score 20 goals in 44 appearances to help Atletico to a third place finish in the La Liga table and with it, qualify for the Champions League.

It was the Brazilian’s first year at the Vicente Calderon stadium after making the move from Rayo Vallecano last summer and he’s been earmarked as the man to take over the mantle of Radamel Falcao – who made a big-money move to Monaco.

However, Madrid have brought in strikers David Villa and Leo Baptistao this summer to cast doubt over Costa’s future and he’s attracting interest from the Premier League with Liverpool and Arsenal seemingly keen to lure him to England this summer.

talkSPORT claim that the Anfield club have tabled a formal offer for the 24-year-old but it’s not yet clear if they’ve met the players £21.8m buy-out clause. The report also suggests Arsenal are keeping a close eye on the strikers situation with boss Arsene Wenger desperate to appease disgruntled fans with a big-money signing.

Some may take Liverpool’s move for Costa as a sign the Reds are planning for life without Arsenal target Luis Suarez, but managing director Ian Ayre insisted today that the Uruguayan wouldn’t be sold this summer.

It remains to be seen whether Atletico are willing to sell the Brazilian international after just 12 months or if Costa would be willing to give up Champions League football for a move to Liverpool if the Spaniards do decide to cash in. Arsenal’s need for a striker is obvious and Costa would represent a cheaper alternative to Suarez, who could cost the Gunners upward of £50m – if they can persuade Liverpool to sell.
