Wayne Rooney is ready to submit a formal transfer request this week as Chelsea prepare to submit an improved £40m offer for the Manchester United striker, according to reports today.

Rooney’s future has come under intense scrutiny in recent weeks after former boss Sir Alex Ferguson revealed he had asked to leave the club before the final game of last season, and the former Everton man was left “angry and confused” by David Moyes’ comments wthat suggested the 27-year-old was now considered as back up to Robin van Persie.

The Mirror claim that Rooney’s future has been the hot-topic in the Old Trafford dressing room during pre-season and his team-mates fully expect the striker to hand in a formal transfer request in the coming days as he seeks a new challenge. An apparent ‘insider’ told the newspaper:

“It is now clear that Wayne has made up his mind about leaving United.

“It has nothing to do with David Moyes. He simply feels that he needs a new challenge.

“The talk around the club has been that he will officially ask for a transfer in the next week.”

The Daily Mail suggest that Chelsea are now ready to test United’s resolve with an improved £40m bid having already seen an offer worth £30m including add ons rejected.

While publicly David Moyes has insisted Rooney is not for sale, the report claims the champions may be prepared to sell him abroad but will do all they can to stop him leaving for a direct title rival such as Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea.

However, would an offer of £40m prove too good for the money-men at Old Trafford to turn down considering Rooney has just two years left on his current contract and is highly unlikely to sign an extension if he’s forced to stay at the club? Only time will tell….
