Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a £13m deal to sign Chelsea target Fabio Coentrao from Real Madrid this summer, according to the Daily Star.

The Portuguese international joined Madrid from Benfica in 2011 but has failed to establish himself as the regular first choice left-back with Brazilian Marcleo often selected ahead of him.

Chelsea have been linked with a move for the 25-year-old with former boss Jose Mourinho understood to be keen on taking him with him to Stamford Bridge this summer.

However, the Star claim reports emanating from Spain suggest that Spurs have now swooped in and agreed a fee in the region of £13m to sign Coentrao, with the defender expected to seal his switch to White Hart Lane within the next week.

Madrid have been locked in talks with the north Londoners this week over the potential signing of Gareth Bale but the report claims that while the Welshman is still expected to make the move to the Bernabeu, Coentrao’s deal is entirely separate to any deal for the PFA player of the Year.

Andre Villas-Boas is currently short of options at the back following an injury to Jan Vertonghen while Steven Caulkner has been sold to Cardiff, so the signing of his fellow countryman would be a welcome addition to the Spurs boss.

Should these reports prove accurate, Coentrao would join Roberto Soldado, Paulinho and Nacer Chadli in moving to north London this summer while a deal for midfielder Etienne Capoue is also understood to be close to completion.
