Van Persie Man Utd

Manchester United

De Gea: 7/10

The Spanish goalkeeper couldn’t have asked for a much easier afternoon. Looked a little susceptible at crosses on occasion, but he did everything asked of him

Rafael:  N/A

The young Brazilian played 15 minutes for the Red Devils before being substituted for fellow defender Chris Smalling after suffering a tight injury.

Vidic: 7/10

The 31-year-old center back held the defence together and kept Wigan at bay, with the Serbian making some important tackles and interceptions.

Jones: 8/10

The young Englishman certainly caught the eye on Sunday afternoon. The powerful defender dealt with Wigan’s attack with ease and was confortable enough to bring the ball out of the back and set up attacks.

Evra: 8/10

The Frenchmen put in an excellent display. Provided Van Persie with a fabulous cross for the opener.

Carrick: 7/10

Michael Carrick orchestrated United’s midfield and controlled the game.

Cleverley: 7/10

The youngster performed well alongside his more experienced colleague. Missed a chance to score in the 50th minute but put in a decent display.

Giggs: 7/10

The Welsh veteran showed he’s still capable of cutting it at the top level. Useful in possession and he put in some dangerous corner.

Zaha: 8/10

The former Crystal Palace youngster can be proud of his ‘competitive’ debut for United as he was one of the most dangerous players on the pitch. He gave Wigan’s defence a torrid time and showed off his array of tricks.

Van Persie: 9/10

Last year’s top scorer kicked off his campaign with two goals to win the game for United. He scored the opener with a marvelous header after passing the ball widely to Evra who provided him with the assist. In the second half, he scored again on the 59th minute with a deflected shot.

Welbeck: 8/10

The England international staked his claim for a regular starting spot with an excellent performance. Went close to scoring towards the end of the first half and picked up an assist for Van Persi’s second.

Wigan

Carson: 5/10

The 27-year-old goalkeeper was utterly powerless for both of United’s goals.

Boyce: 7/10

The ageing full-back put in a steady display under tough circumstances. Did has best to keep United at bay and went close to getting himself on the score-sheet with a header towards the end of the first half.

Barnett: 5/10

The center back was given a tough time by Van Persie and the rest of the United attack.

Perch: 5/10

The versatile defender also couldn’t handle the relentless United attack and was unlucky with RVP’s shot deflecting off him and past Carson.

Crainey: 6/10

The Scottish international put in a spirited performance and his crosses were one of Wigan’s main attacking threats.

Watson: 5/10

The Wigan hero who’s last minute header won the FA Cup last season but couldn’t replicate that form on Sunday.

McArthur: 5/10

Average by his standards and couldn’t get hold of the midfield as Carrick bossed the middle of the park.

McCarthy: 6/10

Showed potential suitors he can cope against the best. McCarthy was industrious as always in midfield.

McClean: 8/10

The former Sunderland winger was Wigan’s best player on the pitch. He was the Championship sides main threat and went close to scoring in the 34th minute.

Maloney: 5/10

The 30-year old-attacker was mainly disappointing as he couldn’t find any time on the ball to make things happen.

Holt: 4/10

The former Norwich striker found things difficult and was largely isolated up front as Vidic and Jones kept him quiet.
