Arsenal have been hit by another transfer blow with Wolfsburg confirming the signing of Luiz Gustavo from Bayern Munich on their official website this morning.

Gustavo was made available for transfer by Bayern after the arrival of Thiago Alcantara from Barcelona with the Brazilian international keen to secure regular first team football ahead of next summers World Cup.

We’ve been strongly linked with a move for the 26-year-old defensive midfielder in recent weeks and the player recently talked-up a move to the Emirates, admitting he’d like to play for the club.

“My contract with Bayern runs until 2015, but it is very important that I play first-team football to keep getting called up for the national team.

“I am in a delicate situation at Bayern, and this needs sorting out. I have personal and professional reasons to move. I have heard about the Arsenal interest. It’s a big club we’re talking about here, so of course I’d like to play for them.”

“Arsenal play a very attractive brand of football and are in the Champions League,” he added. “They also have a very clever manager in Arsene Wenger. Even when Bayern beat them in the last Champions League, you could see they are not pushovers.”

However, we’ve missed out once again with Wolfsburg confirming this morning that the player has signed for an undisclosed fee, penning a five-year contract and will be unveiled at a press conference on Friday afternoon.

It does make you wonder how we could lose out to a club that finished 11th in the Bundesliga table last season and can’t even offer him Europa League football, never-mind Champions League football.

There are rumours that he wanted to remain in Germany, some suggest Arsenal refused to meet the players asking price/wage demands, while others speculate that the close relationship of the Wolfsburg and Bayern owners had something to do with it, but the fact is Gustavo’s not joining Arsenal and we’ve missed out on another top quality player.

Ironically, with Mikel Arteta out for up to six weeks he’s exactly the type of player we need right now. Let’s hope Arsene Wenger has something up his sleeve, and quickly.
