Tottenham remain favourites to sign Brazilian attacker Willian despite Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich making a late personal call to try and hijack the move, according to talkSPORT.

The 25-year-old forward was on the verge of joining Spurs from Anzhi Makhachkala in a £30m deal after completing a medical on Wednesday afternoon before a late move by Chelsea threatened to derail the transfer.

Reports emerged on Thursday night that the Blues had made a last ditch attempt to hijack the deal with owner Roman Abramovich making a personal call to Anzhi owner – fellow Russian billionaire Suleyman Kerimov – offering to pay £32m for the 25-year-old.

Willian is understood to have stalled on signing his contract with the north Londoners in order to hear what Chelsea had to say, but talkSPORT claim that after holding talks with Chelsea, sources close to the attacker have told them that Spurs are still in the driving seat and they remain on course to complete negotiations over a move to White Hart Lane.

It remains to be seen whether talkSPORT’s information is accurate as we’ve heard nothing official come of out as yet, but if Willian does still join Spurs it’s likely that Chelsea’s late interest may mean they have to up their bid slightly or pay the player more in terms of wages.

The Blues have the financial muscle to outbid Tottenham but with the likes of Juan Mata, Eden Hazard, Oscar, Kevin De Bruyne and Andre Schurrle already on the books at Stamford Bridge, it’s unlikely he’ll be guaranteed a starting spot like he will be at Spurs – which could be a decisive factor in a World Cup year.
