Arsenal got off to the perfect start in this years Champions League with a 2-1 win over Marseille in France on Wednesday night. Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey got the goals while Jordan Ayew pulled one back in the final minute from the penalty spot after the Welshman was harshly adjudged to have fouled him in the area.

Here are player ratings:

Szczesny 7/10

Steady performance from Szczesny. Made some decent saves and was off his line a couple of times to sniff out the danger.

Sagna 6/10

Back to his more familiar right-back position but given a tough time in the first half as Marseille looked dangerous down his flank. Improved after the break but passing was also a little sloppy.

Mertesacker 7.5/10

Held the backline together well. Used his long legs to full effect to prevent the hosts going ahead but his sliced attempted clearance almost lead to a goal in the second half. Kept Gignac quiet.

Koscielny 7/10

Steady from Koscielny. Made a few important interceptions but a little wasteful in possession at times.

Gibbs 8/10

Another excellent performance from Gibbsy.Prevented a certain goal with a superb goal-line clearance and almost found the net at the other end but was denied by the keeper. Set up Walcott’s opener with a nice cross.

Flamini 6.5/10

His energy and mobility in midfield was useful but he wasn’t as influential as he was against Sunderland on Saturday.

Ramsey 8.5/10

Another superb all-round performance from the Welshman. Started a little slowly but gradually took control of the game and scored what turned out to be the winner. Was a little unfortunate to give away a late penalty. MOTM

Wilshere 7/10

Started on the left again and kept coming inside to get on the ball which left Arsenal exposed a little. Still linked up well with his team mates and some of his trade-mark turns were on show, but I’d like to see him back in the middle where he’s at his best.

Ozil 7.5/10

In and out the game but when he was on the ball his class shone through. His back heel to set up Gibbs was exquisite and he also sent Walcott clear with another through-ball. Almost opened his account but dragged his shot wide from a tough angle.

Walcott 7/10

Started the game well and was looking dangerous down the right. Opened the scoring with a stunning volley and hopefully the he’s opened the floodgates now.

Giroud 7/10

His goal-scoring run may have ended but he was still a real handful for the Marseille defence.

Subs:

Monreal  & Miyaichi – N/A – on too late.

An excellent win and next up is Napoli at home and if we can secure another three points at the Emirates we’ll be well on our way to qualifying for the knockout stages.
