Arsenal are ready to go head-to-head with north London rivals Tottenham for the signature of Brazilian striker Alexandre Pato when the transfer window re-opens in January, according to the Daily Mail.

Pato joined AC Milan as a 17-year-old in 2007 and went on to establish himself as one of the most promising young strikers in the game.

Unfortunately, a series of injuries hampered his progress in Italy and he eventually lost his first team place at the San Siro leading to a £12.8m move to Corinthians in January 2013.

The 24-year-old has since regained full fitness and is finding something like his best form again back in his homeland and the player has recently claimed that Spurs tried to sign him in the summer but he elected to remain with Corinthians for the time being.

‘Tottenham had called Corinthians to ask for my transfer. I sat at the table with the club and my agent and I decided I wanted to stay.’ Pato is quoted as saying by the Mail

That snub doesn’t appear to have deterred Tottenham with the Mail claiming boss Andre Villa-Boas remains keen on signing the forward and may make another attempt to bring him to the Premier League this winter.

However, Spurs could face stiff competition from rivals Arsenal with the newspaper suggesting that the Gunners are also monitoring Pato’s situation with boss Arsene Wenger said to be in the market for another striker in January.

It would certainly be something of a coup if either Arsenal or Tottenham could lure Pata to north London but it remains to be seen whether the player would be willing to switch clubs in the build-up to the World Cup in Brazil 2014.
