Manchester United boss David Moyes is facing a potential midfield injury crisis ahead of Sunday’s clash against Cardiff City with Michael Carrick, Phil Jones and Marouane Fellaini all concerns, according to the Mirror.

Key midfielder Michael Carrick has been playing through the pain in recent weeks due to an Achilles injury but the club has finally decided to resolve the problem once and for all.

The 32-year-old has been given the green light to go on holiday before returning to Carrington to begin his rehabilitation with the injury expected to keep him out for six weeks.

Phil Jones, who has been deployed alongside Carrick in recent weeks, was forced to withdraw from the England squad to face Chile and Germany with a groin injury and is now facing a race against time to be fit for the trip to Wales.

Summer signing Marouane Fellaini is already nursing a wrist injury that is hampering his performances on the pitch, with the Belgian international struggling for form since making the move from Everton in September.

United have already confirmed Fellaini will require surgery which will rule him out for up to 10 weeks, and the newspaper report suggests United may put him under the knife sooner rather than later due to his poor form.

It leaves Moyes with a dilemma in midfield and he may have to call-upon Ryan Giggs – who turns 40 next week – or the out-of-favour Anderson, which wouldn’t be ideal as the Brazilian hasn’t played in the league since late September and is clearly not in the clubs long-term plans.

Tom Cleverley hasn’t completed 90 minutes for the club in nearly six weeks and has been struggling for form this season, while Darren Fletcher is still working his way back to full fitness since taking an extended break from the game due to an ongoing bowel condition.
