Liverpool have opened talks with agent Pere Guardiola over a new deal that would see striker Luis Suarez become the highest paid player in the clubs history, according to the Telegraph.

Suarez has been in sensational form this season with his 17 goals and 10 assists in just 11 games guiding Liverpool to second in the Premier League and cementing themselves as genuine title contenders.

Understandably, the Reds are desperate to try and keep the Uruguayan at the club and the Telegraph claim managing director Ian Ayre flew out to Barcelona on Tuesday to hold talks with the strikers agent, Pere Guardiola, over a new long-term deal that would be worth in excess of £130,000-a-week.

The 26-year-old’s current deal runs until 2016 but given the players stunning form this season, and the fact he has recently tried to force a move away from Anfield, Liverpool chiefs know they face a battle to keep him at the club so are keen to secure his long-term future while everything is going well.

Suarez has now settled back into life on Merseyside after a traumatic summer that saw him go public with his desire to leave Liverpool amid strong interest from Arsenal, with the north Londoners having two bids rejected as the striker made clear his desire to play in the Champions League.

Arsene Wenger only recently reaffirmed his admiration of Suarez, calling him a ‘dream’ player, with reports suggesting the Gunners boss had still not given up all hope of luring him to the Emirates.

However, while it appears Liverpool have made the first significant move to try and secure the players long-term future and keep the likes of Arsenal at bay, the Telegraph suggests that Suarez is unlikely to sign any new deal until the end of the season when his decision is likely to be based on whether the club qualify for the Champions League or not.

Sunday’s 5-0 thrashing of Tottenham has significantly boosted the Reds top-four hopes so if they can navigate the next month successful without the services of captain Steven Gerrard and striker Daniel Sturridge, they will be well positioned to qualify in the Champions League places. But the greatest prize might just be securing the future of one of the world’s hottest strikers.
