Arsenal ave stepped up their interest in Jackson Martinez by making a formal enquiry about the striker’s availability in case a loan deal for Alvaro Morata cannot be agreed, according to the Daily Mail.

The Gunners need for a striker intensified this week following the news that Theo Walcott would miss the rest of the season after rupturing a cruciate ligament in his left knee during Saturday’s FA Cup win over Tottenham.

Reports claim north London chiefs have opened talks with Real Madrid over taking young striker Alvaro Morata on a six-month loan, but the La Liga giants are believed to be opposed to letting the 21-year-old leave this month.

This has led to Arsene Wenger looking at alternatives and the Mail suggest that while the Frenchman would love to sign Atletico Madrid hitman Diego Costa, he understands a deal will be extremely difficult to pull off so he has now made a formal enquiry to Porto over the availability of Jackson Martinez.

The 27-year-old has continued his excellent goal-scoring form this season with 12 goals in just 14 games, but he won’t come cheap with the newspaper stating his buy-out clause is worth just over £33m.

Martinez recently admitted that he would jump at the chance of moving to the Emirates after revealing he supported the club as a youngster:

“I cheered for Arsenal when I was a kid – I love their style of play,” he said.

“It’s flowing and open with a lot of first touch passes. It would be suitable for a player like me.

“If I get a chance to play for a high level club like Arsenal I wouldn’t hesitate to accept it.” Martinez is quoted as saying by the Mirror

Arsenal currently sit top of the Premier League after 20 games but their season is at risk of being derailed due to a lack of options up front, and it appears Wenger is working hard behind the scenes at trying and bring in some much-needed fire-power for the season half of the season.
