Manchester United have been dealt a fresh injury blow with reports this morning claiming that Robin van Persie is set to miss a further six weeks with a thigh injury.

The Dutch hitman has already missed the last five weeks with the problem, which he picked up while taking the corner which led to the winning goal against Shakhtar Donetsk back in early December.

The injury is similar to one which he suffered back in 2007 during his time at Arsenal, when it took him nearly three months to regain full fitness.

United have been desperately trying to get the striker fit and sent him back to Holland to work with a fitness coach at PSV Eindhoven in a bid to try and finally cure the problem.

However, is doesn’t seem to have done the trick as the Metro are one of several newspapers who are reporting today that RVP has suffered a set back and is now set to miss the next six weeks.

The news will come as a body blow to beleaguered boss David Moyes as United have struggled hugely in his absence, with the club suffering a disastrous start to 2014 which has seen them lose all three games so far.

Moyes refused to set a date on the striker’s comeback when speaking at his press conference yesterday, saying:

‘We are trying to get him back but it’s a thigh strain similar to the one he had at Arsenal so we are having to manage it correctly.

‘He has been to Holland to work with the guy he knows over there and we are doing everything we can. There are some injuries you can play with but not the thigh.’ [source:  Daily Mail]

If the reports of a set back prove accurate, Van Persie could miss United’s next nine fixtures, including crunch games against Chelsea and Arsenal.

Swansea arrive at Old Trafford this afternoon before the defending champions trip to Stamford Bridge next weekend. United then face games against Sunderland, Cardiff, Stoke and Fulham before they travel to the Emirates on the 12th February to face Arsenal and it seems Van Persie is now in a race against time to be fit in time to face his former side.

United currently sit seventh in the Premier League table and are a full 11 points off leaders Arsenal and five off the top four, so the last thing Moyes needs is his star striker to be out for another six weeks.
