Arsenal could be set to splash some cash this month with Arsene Wenger ready to make a €36m (£30m) double offer to Newcastle United for midfielder Yohan Cabaye and full-back Davide Santon, according to RMC Sport.

The club have been linked with a whole host of names in recent weeks but the majority have been strikers, with many fans feeling another front-man is required to offer support to Olivier Giroud during the second half of the season.

However, French media outlet RMC Sport are claiming today that Wenger is also looking to strengthen his midfield and defensive options this month and will make a €36m (£30m) double bid to Newcastle for Cabaye and Santon.

Arsenal were strongly linked with a move for Cabaye last summer and reportedly saw a £12m bid rejected by the Geordies before Wenger gave up his pursuit to sign Mathieu Flamini on a free transfer.

Cabaye has continued his excellent form this season at St James’ Park so it’s no surprise to read that Wenger is to renew his interest, and with Mikel Arteta now approaching his 32nd birthday, the French international would be the perfect replacement and would slot straight into the Gunners midfield if he was to finally make the move to the Emirates.

The supposed interest in Santon is interesting and I can only guess that Wenger sees him as a potential replacement for Bacary Sagna, who’s contract expires in the summer.

Reports last week claimed that Sagna will hold fresh contract talks with Arsenal officials this week in a bid to finally tie him down to an extension, but if no deal is agreed then it makes sense for Wenger to be looking at potential replacements.

Santon is able to fill both full-back positions so would be a useful addition and of course the Italian international now has plenty of Premier League experience under his belt, which always helps.

It remains to be seen how Newcastle will respond if this proposed €36m (£30m) double bid does in fact go in, but it could turn out to be a shrewd piece of business if Wenger could pull it off.
