Chelsea are willing to listen to offers for David Luiz with Spanish giants Barcelona tipped to table a €35m (£29m) bid this month, according to the Daily Star.

Luiz has fallen out-of-favour under Jose Mourinho this season with the Portuguese coach preferring to go with Gary Cahill and John Terry as his central defensive partnership.

It’s restricted the Brazilian international to just nine Premier League starts this season, and two of those have come as a make-shift defensive midfielder, so it certainly seems as though Mourinho isn’t convinced by his abilities at the back.

The Star claim that the Blues are now willing to sell the 26-year-old if they receive a suitable offer during the January transfer window and it seems Barca are ready to try their luck in luring him to the Nou Camp.

The Catalans were strongly linked with a move for Luiz in the summer but after a deal failed to materialise, the newspaper suggests they are now ready to renew their interest and test Chelsea’s resolve with a €35m (£29m) bid.

A centre-back who’s comfortable on the ball is believed to be Barcelona’s priority and while doubts continue over Luiz’s position sense at the back, few could argue he’s one of the best ball-playing defenders around.

If he does end up leaving west London this month, it will be a disappointing end to what began as a promising career at Chelsea for the lovable Brazilian. Luiz became something of a cult figure at Stamford Bridge following his big-money move from Benfica in 2011, with afro-wigs regularly on show among the crowd in homage to the frizzy-haired defender.

However, it seems his time at the club is slowly coming to an end and with the Brazil World Cup just around the corner, you wouldn’t begrudge Luiz pushing for a move to secure more regular first team action during the second half of the season.
