Manchester United are set to be handed a huge blow ahead of Sunday’s crunch clash against Chelsea with the Mirror reporting that Wayne Rooney is expected to miss the game with a groin injury.

The 28-year-old has missed United’s last three games after struggling to overcome the problem, and the club decided to send him to Egypt this week with fitness coach Richard Dawkins for warm-weather training in a desperate bid to try and get the striker fit to face the Blues.

However, it seems the efforts have been in vain with the Mirror claiming that Rooney has failed to recover sufficiently and is set to miss the trip to Stamford Bridge. If this proves accurate, it will come as a huge blow to boss David Moyes as he will be without his top two strikers for what is going to be a crucial game in his sides hopes of securing a top four finish this season.

United are already without star striker Robin van Persie – who is ruled out with a thigh strain – so to be without Rooney as well will leave the defending champions severely weakened up front.

The Reds head into the weekend action sitting seventh in the Premier League table, 11 points off leaders Arsenal and five adrift of fourth-placed Liverpool, so defeat again this weekend could be a hammer blow to their hopes of securing Champions League football.

If Rooney does end up joining RVP on the sidelines, then the burden will fall on Danny Welbeck to fill the void up front while Javier Hernandez could also be called upon if Moyes feels he wants more firepower in attack.

Will they be enough to clinch a vital three points at the Bridge? Or will United struggle without Rooney and RVP? Share your views below.
