Moura: In his Sao Paulo days before PSG move

Manchester United are ready to step up their hunt for new signings by tabling a €36m (£30m) bid for Paris Saint-Germain playmaker Lucas Moura, according to the Daily Star.

Moura made his name with Sao Paulo in Brazil before opting to join big-spending PSG in the summer of 2012 when he was aged just 19. United were also strongly linked with the talented attacker but the big-spending Ligue 1 outfit blew them out the water with a mammoth £37m bid.

Then United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was left stunned by the amount PSG had paid for the teenager, saying at the time that the game had finally ‘gone mad’:

“I find it quite amazing that a club can pay 45m Euros for a 19-year-old boy. When somebody’s paying €45 million for a 19-year-old boy you have to say the game’s gone mad.” Ferguson is quoted as saying by the Star.

However, Moura has struggled to establish himself at the Parc des Princes and is finding it difficult to hold down a regular first team place in Laurent Blanc’s side this season.

The Star claim that United have retained their interest in the 21-year-old with David Moyes said to have travelled to Paris to watch the Brazilian International against Bordeaux this week as part of a European wide search for new talent.

The newspaper suggests that PSG are open to offers for the attacking midfielder and the champions are ready to test their resolve with a €36m (£30m) bid while they are also willing to match the players £120,000-a-week wages.

It remains to be seen whether United’s bid will be enough to persuade PSG into selling, but if this report is accurate, it shows that the Premier League champions are certainly willing to spend big to strengthen their squad this month.

United have endured a difficult season so far and currently sit seventh in the table, a full 11 points adrift of leaders Arsenal. A series of disappointing home defeats has heaped the pressure on David Moyes and it seems he’s ready to try and spend his way out of trouble to get the club back challenging the top four.

Moura would be an exciting addition who should get fans off their seats at Old Trafford, and with the player currently struggling for playing time and a home World Cup on the horizon, he could be tempted by the move if Moyes can guarantee him regular first team action.

Yes time waits no one. Moyes should sign players who are available instead of just keeping us anxiously waiting. Other teams are signing then what are we waiting for??

You’re all talking absolute rubbish. If he can’t hold down a place for PSG what makes you think he’d be able to do so for ManUtd? Also, just because Moyes is taking the time to look at matches abroad it doesn’t mean he’s buying every player he looks at. This is all the usual press make-believe and you’re all swallowing it hook, line and sinker.

Agree 100%. Can’t get a game In France. Hell of a lot more physical and demanding in the Prem. Why would you risk it for 30 mill … Veron, Kleberson. No thanks. Get a proven performer !!! And another thing whoever we sign has to do it for Utd. Not interested in mercenaries. We need to keep the club unique. Bollox to the City and Chelsea approach.

Moyes and his scouts are looting the club and fooling the fans. They are enjoying abroad thus letting us believe that they are searching for top players.Mourhino and Wenger are sitting in their office and they have the players they wish like Matic and Ozil

It is not about showing us players but about signing players. From August till now Moyes and his board had not seen a player to sign, absurd

    January 17, 2014 at 9:43 am

Yea!signing Lucas Moura should be done as soon as possible because he’s gonna make a great impact in the team and I hope David Moyes will surely bring him(Moura)to old trafford because we need players like him(Moura)in the team to boost united up.

  27. Oldnail

    January 17, 2014 at 9:49 am

Not worth half of that. PSG were plain idiotic to pay 37m for him in the first place. City, PSG, Monaco and Madrid etc, should be told to subsidised transfers as they have totally wrecked the market place. Asking 30- 40 for unproven players is mental.
