Chelsea are trying to hijack Liverpool’s move for Mohamed Salah after submitting a £10m bid to FC Basel for the highly-rated winger, according to the Metro.

Salah has been strongly linked with a move to Anfield in recent weeks and reports earlier on Wednesday suggested the Merseysiders were closing in on his signature after apparently agreeing a £10m deal with Basel.

The Express are one of several newspapers who are claiming that the 21-year-old was due to arrive in England on Friday before heading to Melwood to undergo a medical and put pen-to-paper over a long-term contract.

However, it seems that move could now be under threat with the Metro reporting that Chelsea have made a late bid to try and hijack the move by submitting a £10m offer of their own.

The newspaper suggests that Jose Mourinho has identified the Egyptian international as the ideal replacement for Juan Mata – who is close to completing a big-money move to Manchester United – with the Portuguese coach seemingly unwilling to let the Spaniard leave until someone else is brought in.

The news will come as a concern to Reds boss Brendan Rodgers who is desperate to bring Salah to Anfield to help their push for a top-four finish this season, with the club currently sitting fourth in the Premier League after 22 games.

Salah has enjoyed a hugely impressive 18 months in Switzerland with Basel and it seems he left a lasting impression on Chelsea after scoring in both games against them in the Champions League group stages.

The Blues has previous when it comes to late hijacks as they famously gazumped Tottenham to the signing of Willian in the summer, and Liverpool fans will be praying the don’t manage to pull off the same trick again this time around.
