Mandzukic Heading For London Switch?

Mario Mandzukic is being tipped to move to London after being told by Bayern Munich president Franz Beckenbauer that he’s surplus to requirements at the club.

With the January transfer window in full flow clubs are working hard to try and strengthen their squad for the second half of the season, so we’ll keep you up-to-date with all the latest news, gossip and rumours. Today, could Mario Mandzukic be heading to London this month?

Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have been placed on red alert after Bayern Munich president Franz Beckenbauer hinted that Mario Mandzukic can leave the club, according to the Metro.

The Croatian international hitman has dropped down the pecking order at the Allianz Arena this season with Pep Guardiola often going with either Mario Gotze or Thomas Muller in a ‘false 9’ role up front, and Mandzukic is going to find first team football even harder to come by next season once Robert Lewandowski completes his free transfer move from Borussia Dortmund.

The 27-year-old was left out of the squad entirely for last nights 2-0 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach and after the game, president Franz Beckenbauer claimed that the striker can ‘pack his bags’ as he doesn’t fit into Guardiola’s system.

‘Mandzukic could pack his bags,’

‘I don’t think Mandzukic suits Pep Guardiola’s style.

‘Also – even without him, Guardiola could still count on Thomas Muller and Mario Gotze in attack.’ Beckenbauer is quoted as saying by the Metro.

This news is sure to alert several clubs throughout Europe and in particular a host of clubs here in the Premier League with the Metro suggesting that London-based trio Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham have all shown an interest in the player in recent weeks.

Mandzukic was considered a vital part of Bayern’s team last season and scored 22 goals in 40 games to help the club to a sensational treble, but his fortunes have changed under Guardiola this campaign. He’s still got 13 goals to his name but with Beckenbauer all-but confirming he’s now surplus to requirements, a scramble for his signature could now ensue and I’d expect there will be a number of interested parties picking up the phone.

Arsenal are expected to add to their strike-force this month and a player of Mandzukic’s quality could be the difference between them clinching the title this season or falling away during the second half of the season, and he would certainly offer some stiff competition to Olivier Giroud up front.

Chelsea will soon be armed with the proceeds of Juan Mata’s sale and none of Jose Mourinho’s current crop of strikers have convinced so far this season, while Spurs could also be on the hunt for new blood with Tim Sherwood looking to put his own stamp on the squad left to him by Andre Villas-Boas.
