Arsenal were held to a 2-2 draw by an impressive Southampton side on Tuesday night with Mathieu Flamini sent off for a two footed challenge late on.

After the game, Arsene Wenger gave Arsenal.com the latest on the fitness of Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere. Ramsey was expected to return for the game last night but he failed to make the trip to the south coast and it was reported afterwards that he will be out for up to six weeks after injuring his thigh again in training on Friday.

The boss confirmed in his post match press conference that the Welshman had suffered a set back but refused to put a timescale on his recovery, simply saying he’ll have to be cautious with him.

Wilshere also missed the game last night after picking up an ankle knock during Friday’s 4-0 FA Cup win over Coventry City and thankfully Wenger said the midfielder’s condition is “not bad”. Here’s what the boss told the clubs website:

on Ramsey’s injury…

Aaron Ramsey is out for longer than we expected because he had a little setback in training yesterday. So I couldn’t bring him here. It’s the same muscle he did a bit again so we have to be cautious this time.

on Wilshere…

Wilshere is not bad.

Losing Ramsey for up to six weeks will be a huge blow but it’s only Goal.com who are reporting this at present and Wenger’s comments didn’t sound as though the injury was as bad as the reports are suggesting.

Hopefully he’ll be back sooner rather than later and the same goes for Wilshere as we’re going to be short of central options for a while with Flamini suspended for four games following his sending off. He will get an extra game ban because he’s already served a suspension this season after picking up five bookings.
