Liverpool sent managing director Ian Ayre out to Ukraine on Wednesday to try and push through a €19.4 (£16m) deal for Yevhen Konoplyanka after Tottenham made a late attempt to hijack the move, according to the Telegraph.

News emerged on Tuesday night that Liverpool had stepped up their interest in the 24-year-old winger having been linked with him for some time, with reports suggesting they had tabled a formal offer to the players current club, Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk.

The Telegraph claim that Reds MD Ayre was sent out to Ukraine yesterday to desperately try and force through the €19.4 (£16m) move after Spurs made a late attempt to hijack the deal.

The newspaper suggests that Ayre is hoping to return to the UK today with a deal in place and then arrange for Konoplyanka to have a medical, but they will be sweating on Tottenham’s interest until the deal is signed on the dotted line.

If Tim Sherwood’s side manage to lure Konoplyanka to White Hart Lane, it won’t be the first time Tottenham gazump the Merseysiders with the north Londoners snatching both Gylfi Sigurdsson and Clint Dempsey away from Liverpool’s grasp in recent transfer windows, while Chelsea also scuppered their attempt’s to sign Mohamed Salah last week, so Brendan Rodgers will be keen to get this deal finalised before lightning can strike for a fourth time.

Liverpool are well positioned to qualify for the Champions League with Rodgers side sitting three points clear in fourth following Tuesday night’s 4-0 win over rivals Everton, and the addition of Konoplyanka could give them that added boost heading into the final stages of the campaign.

The Ukrainian international is a pacey winger who is predominantly deployed on the left side, but is capable of playing anywhere across the front three, so he would certainly give Rodgers plenty of options in attack if he ends up making the move to Anfield before Friday nights deadline.
