Arsenal have finally confirmed the signing of Kim Kallstrom on loan from Spartak Moscow until the end of the season.

The experienced Swedish international was surprisingly linked with a move to the Emirates this morning after Arsene Wenger confirmed he was in the market for another midfielder due to Aaron Ramsey being ruled out for up to six weeks.

The story soon snowballed with reports confirming the 31-year-old was at the clubs training ground undergoing a medical and discussing personal terms, and now the signing has been announced on Arsenal.com.

The boss has expressed his delight at bringing Kallstrom on board as he’s a vastly experienced midfielder who has over 100 caps for Sweden and is also eligible to play in the Champions League.

He used to be a fairly attack-minded player but has moved to become a more defensive midfielder in recent years as he’s entered the twilight years of his career. He’s left-footed and has been known to be a good long-range passer and excellent set-piece taker.

I think it’s clear we’ve bought him as a useful squad player and he certainly won’t command a first team place every week, but with Ramsey out, Flamini suspended for three games and Wilshere also struggling with niggling ankle problems, I’m sure he’ll get his fair share of game time.

Here’s a look at where I think he’ll be deployed by the boss and potentially who he’s up against for a starting spot while Ramsey is unavailable.

Like I said, Kallstrom wont be the first name on the team sheet and he’ll be deployed in the middle of the park and probably be looked as a fall-back option when the likes of Wilshere and Flamini are out.

He isn’t the big-money, ‘marquee’ signing that many had hoped for but perhaps he’s going to be a useful addition during the second half of the season, especially with all the injury problems we’ve had in midfield.
