Arsenal have opened preliminary talks with the camp of Loic Remy about a potential £9m move and could go head-to-head with Newcastle United over his signature this summer, according to ESPN.

The French hitman is enjoying an excellent time on loan at Newcastle this season and has scored 11 goals in 22 appearances so far at St James’ Park. This has come after he netted 6 in 14 games for doomed Queens Park Rangers during the second half of last season, so he’s certainly shown he’s capable of doing the business in the Premier League.

Remy was constantly linked with a move to Arsenal before he joined QPR but it seems Arsene Wenger has now renewed his interest as he looks to add to his strike-force this summer.

ESPN claim that Arsenal officials have already held initial talks with the striker about a potential move to the Emirates and we could now battle it out with Newcastle for his signature at the end of the season.

The Geordies are understood to be desperate to make his loan move permanent and even tried to do a deal in January before Remy insisted he wanted to wait until the end of the season before deciding on his long-term future.

The report suggests that the 27-year-old is valued at £9m but Harry Redknapp may put a block on his sale if he successfully guides QPR to promotion back to the top flight, with the west London club currently sitting third in the Championship table.

A striker is certainly a priority for Arsenal this summer after we failed to sign someone to lighten the load on Olivier Giroud in January, and it would be a great deal if we could land Remy for just £9m. He’s got pace, which we lack when Theo Walcott’s not playing, and has proven he can score goals in English football.

He might not be the world class front man many Arsenal fans are dreaming of, but he could be a very shrewd buy which would allow Wenger to spend his funds elsewhere on the squad.
