Arsenal ‘Working’ On Deal To Re-Sign Unsettled Van Persie

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is working on a deal to re-sign unsettled Manchester United striker Robin van Persie at the end of the season, according to reports.

The January transfer window may have slammed shut but clubs will still be working hard behind the scenes at identifying targets for the summer, so we’ll bring you all the latest news, gossip and rumours. Today, could Robin van Persie re-sign for Arsenal?

Arsenal are working on a deal to re-sign unsettled Manchester United striker Robin van Persie at the end of the season, according to the Metro.

Van Persie spent eight years with Arsenal before making the controversial decision to force a move to Old Trafford in the summer of 2012, when he angered fans after publicly questioning the clubs ambition.

Arsene Wenger reluctantly sold the Dutchman for £24m and the strikers decision to leave seemed justified when he went on to win the Premier League title in his first season, scoring 26 goals in 38 appearances in the process.

However, things haven’t gone so well for the 30-year-old this campaign, with a series of niggling injuries restricting him to just 20 games in all competitions and he’s had to watch on as United have endured a disastrous season that’s likely to not only end up trophy-less but also without Champions League football next year.

Van Persie slammed United as ‘lousy’ following Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat to Olympiakos and this outburst has only fuelled speculation that he’s unhappy at Old Trafford under the stewardship of David Moyes, and it’s believed he’s already told friends and family that is considering his future.

The Metro are now claiming that a sensational return to Arsenal is on the cards with Arsene Wenger understood to be working on a deal to re-sign the Holland international at the end of the season.

Following reports last week that Wenger has already met with RVP’s agent to discuss the move, the newspaper suggests that the Frenchman has now held talks with the Gunners board to discuss financial details, with the club expecting the striker to be available for less than the £24m they sold him for 18 months ago.

Van Persie returning to north London is certainly an intriguing prospect but I’m not sure how it would go down among the Emirates faithful. The striker became public enemy No.1 when he left so I’m not convinced many would welcomed him back with open arms while it would also be an extremely difficult move for the player to make after everything that’s gone on.

Arsenal are likely to be in the market for another striker this summer but I’m also not convinced that a 30-year-old with a long history of injury problems would be the idea signing, so while this potential transfer is one worth keeping an eye on over the coming weeks, I’m not sure anything will come of it.
