Manchester United have opened formal talks with Sporting Lisbon over the signing of €35m-rated midfielder William Carvalho this summer, according to the Independent.
United have been strongly linked with the 21-year-old over the past few months with reports suggesting that David Moyes has sent his team of scouts to closely watch the player in action on at least 12 occasions this season.
It seems the Scot has finally decided to make his move for the player with the Independent one of several media outlets who are claiming that the Red Devils have now opened talks with Sporting Lisbon over a potential €35m (£29m) move at the end of the season.
The newspaper suggests that United only value Carvalho at around £25m, but with Moyes eager to tie up his key deals before this summers World Cup finals, the defending champions may be forced to up their valuation to match what Sporting are demanding.
United have endured a disappointing campaign this year and look likely to miss out on Champions League football next season, so it’s no wonder Moyes looks set to rebuild his flagging squad this summer.
Central midfield has been an area of concern for the club with 33-year-old Michael Carrick plagued by injury problems, Tom Cleverley coming under fire for a series of below-par performances while summer signing Marouane Fellaini has struggled for form and fitness since making a £27m move from Everton.
So a defensive midfielder looks likely to be on the cards and Carvalho would be an exciting addition if United could pull it off. The Angola-born Portugal international has been hugely impressive at the heart of Sporting’s midfield this season and is expected to be on the plane to Brazil this summer.
A star showing at the World Cup will heighten interest in the player and increase his value, so United would be wise to try and tie up a deal early in order to avoid a potential bidding war.
