Arsenal Preparing £100m Summer Spree But Wenger Delays Decision Over Future

Arsenal will have £100million to spend in the transfer market this summer but there are still doubts over whether Arsene Wenger will be the man who spends it.

The January transfer window may have slammed shut but clubs will still be working hard behind the scenes at identifying targets for the summer, so we’ll bring you all the latest news, gossip and rumours. Today, Gooner Mac brings us news of Arsene Wenger’s future and a possible £100m transfer kitty.

Arsenal will have £100million to spend in the transfer market this summer but there are still doubts over whether Arsene Wenger will still be around to spend it, according to the Telegraph.

The Frenchman’s contract runs-out at the end of the season and he was widely expected to commit his future to the club after an encouraging campaign that’s seen us mount a serious title challenge.

However, there has still been no sign of an official announcement and the Telegraph claim that Arsene is waiting until the end of the season before making a final decision over his future. A three-year extension is on the table and the board are understood to remain confident he’ll sign it, but the boss feels that the outcome of the season will determine whether he’s still the right man to take the club forward.

The newspaper seems to suggest that Arsene may walk if we fail to end our much talked about trophy drought this season, as he feels failure to land some silverware would not only signal that he’s underperformed but he might also lose a the support of a large section of the Arsenal fan base.

We’re the clear favourites to win the FA Cup this season with a semi-final against Wigan and a potential final against either Sheffield United or Hull standing in our way, while the 1-0 win over Spurs on Sunday kept us firmly in the title race, so the odds are looking good that we will get that monkey off our back and end our nine-year trophy drought.

However, failure to win the FA Cup at least could see an unprecedented number of fans turn on Wenger and I fear his time will be up if we don’t lift that trophy at Wembley on May 17th, and it seems he knows it too.

The Telegraph also claim that Arsenal will have a £100m transfer budget available to spend this summer with a world class striker top of the agenda. The transfer kitty will have to include wages and associated fees, but it means we will have enough money to buy a striker in the £40m price range and still have enough left over to buy a couple of smaller purchases too.

The report states that the club have given up any hope of signing Luis Suarez but are continuing to monitor Mario Mandzukic, Jackson Martínez, Julian Draxler and Diego Costa.

Costa is arguably the hottest property right now but I fear we’ll face some stiff competition for his signature, so my preferred option if we’re going to make one big-money purchase would be Draxler. He’s not an out-and-out centre-forward yet but the feeling is that Arsene will try and do what he’s done with the likes of Thierry Henry and Robin van Persie in the past, and turn him into a striker if we do end up buying him this summer.

But, the big question is will the Frenchman still be around to make it happen….?
