Manchester United appear to be winning the race to sign Everton defender Seamus Coleman with the Mirror claiming a deal worth around £15m has already been agreed in principal.

Coleman has emerged as one of the best full-backs in the Premier League this season under Roberto Martinez and scored his seventh goal of the campaign with a late winner over Cardiff City last weekend. His impressive form has understandably attracted interest in his services and both United and Arsenal have been linked with a move in recent months.

Arsene Wenger is drawing up a list of potential replacements for Bacary Sagna with the experienced Frenchman out of contract this summer and yet to agree terms over an extension at the Emirates. However, with the Gunners delaying making any serious moves for another right-back until Sagna’s future is resolved, it seems United have taken advantage and made an early swoop to beat their rivals to Coleman.

The Mirror claim the defending champions are already in advanced talks with Everton over a potential £15m deal for the 25-year-old and are confident of getting a deal done. In fact, the newspaper suggests that senior figures have indicated that an outline agreement with the Toffees has already been agreed.

Moyes was the man in charge at Everton when he signed Coleman from League of Ireland side Sligo Rovers in 2008 for just £60,000 and helped turn him into the adventurous full-back he is today, so a move to link-up with his former boss could appeal greatly to the player.

With Rafael struggling to convince at right-back, and Chris Smalling and Phil Jones’ long-term future’s seen in the middle, Moyes has set his sights on Coleman and it appears a deal to take him to Old Trafford could now be close.

United have endured a disastrous season which looks destined to end without Champions League qualification for next year, so the club are expected to be busy in the transfer market this summer.

Moyes has come under increasing pressure following Sunday’s 3-0 defeat to Liverpool but he’d certainly win over some fans if he could secure the signing of Coleman. Although they will hope he’ll turn out to be more of a success than the last player Moyes snapped up from his former club, with Marouane Fellaini struggling to replicate the kind of form that earned him a £27m move last summer.
