Arsenal’s title hopes took a huge dent today after being thrashed 6-0 by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Here, Gooner Mac gives us his player ratings from the game.

Humiliating doesn’t even explain how bad this defeat was. Arsenal were a shambles from the first minute and were completely out-thought and out-fought all over the park, and in the dug-out.

Arsene Wenger committed footballing suicide by playing a high line against a team like Chelsea, who have pace on the counter attack and players who can play a killer through-ball. Did the boss not learn from the Liverpool defeat?

The players didn’t help matters as they were all well below par and completely collapsed, not for the first time this season. Here are my ratings:

Szczesny 3/10

Was left exposed but a keeper doesn’t often play well and concede six. The Pole was nowhere near saving the first two and was badly at fault for the fifth. Made a couple of other saves but generally looked poor.

Sagna 3/10

Unable to deal the Chelsea attack. Was okay when he was switched to left-back in the second half but woeful when he ventured forward with his crossing useless.

Mertesacker 3/10

Was thrown to the Wolves when Wenger asked the team to play the high line. Per’s lack of pace was badly exposed and he couldn’t cope with the pace and runs of the Chelsea players.

Koscielny 2/10

All over the place. His head dropped as soon as the first goal went in and he didn’t recover. Where was the fight? Replaced at the break.

Gibbs 3/10

Very poor days work from Gibbs. Caught high up the pitch for the first two goals before unluckily being sent off in a case of mistaken identity.

Arteta 2/10

Just can’t cut it in the big games anymore. His lack of pace was a problem once again as he was completely over-run by the powerful Chelsea midfield. Just doesn’t have the legs to compete at the highest level.

Oxlade-Chamberlain 1/10

Nightmare from the youngster. Gave away possession for the crucial first goal and failed to get a tackle in on Eto’o as he tracked back, when he slipped at the vital moment. His afternoon got worse when he gave away a needless penalty for 3-0, which got Gibbs sent off when the referee got mixed up which player made the offence. The Ox was then hauled off at half time.

Cazorla 3/10

Very difficult game for him. Just doesn’t have the physicality needed to compete against the powerful sides like Chelsea. Was bullied all over the pitch.

Rosicky 4/10

At least Rosicky worked hard and showed a bit of grit and determination.

Podolski 3/10

Barley touched the ball before being replaced in the 24th minute after Gibbs was sent off.

Giroud 2/10

Useless, again. Looked absolutely knackered and offered us nothing up front to work off. Missed a huge chance to open the scoring when it was still 0-0. A world class striker is badly needed this summer.

Subs

Vermaelen 3/10 – Faired slightly better than Koscielny, but probably only because Chelsea were playing in second gear.

Flamini 4/10 – Should have started.

Jenkinson 3/10 – Tried hard but way too late to have any sort of impact.

We better get this performance out our system quickly. Thankfully we have Swansea at home on Tuesday. Anything but a win and we can forget about the title, if we haven’t done so already.
