Chelsea have been handed a boost ahead of their Champions League quarter-final double-header against PSG with key defender Thiago Silva fracturing his cheek-bone at the weekend, according to the Mirror.
The Brazilian centre-back picked up the injury during Friday night’s win at L’Orient and after examinations over the weekend, PSG officials have now confirmed he has suffered a fracture to his cheek-bone – although the injury won’t require any form of surgery.
The Ligue 1 champions will asses Silva’s condition over the coming days and while they’ve played down suggestions the defender could miss the Chelsea games, the injury must surely mean he’s considered a doubt to for the first leg at least.
A statement from PSG read:
”His [Silva’s] condition did not require surgery. The amount of time he will be out of training will depend on the evolution of pain in the coming days but his participation in the quarter finals of the Champions League should not be under threat.” [source: Mirror]
The Blues take on PSG in the first leg in France on Wednesday the 2nd April, which is just over a week away, and although Silva does have the option of wearing a facial mask, it may be decided it’s too early for him to return to action given the risk of him receiving a knock to the face.
Silva is a centre-back and will be expected to contest several aerial duels throughout the game, so it will hardly be ideal if he’s got to go up against the likes of John Terry, Branislav Ivanovic and Gary Cahill wearing a mask to protect a fractured cheek-bone.
It would be a major boost for Chelsea if Silva does end up missing out as he’s widely considered as one of the best central defender in the world and it would hand Jose Mourinho’s side a major advantage.
