Spurs Ace Has ‘Told Friends’ He Wants Arsenal Move

Tottenham Hotspur defender Younes Kaboul has told friends he’s keen on joining bitter rivals Arsenal on a free transfer when his contract expires this summer.

As we approach the business end of the season clubs are starting to make plans for the summer transfer market so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, could Younes Kaboul ‘do a Sol Campbell’?

Some interesting news coming from the Daily Star this morning, with the newspaper claiming that Tottenham defender Younes Kaboul is keen on joining bitter rivals Arsenal this summer.

The 28-year-old rejoined Spurs from Portsmouth in 2010 for a fee believed to be in the region of £9.5m but a series of injuries have restricted him to just 66 appearances over the last four seasons.

He has recently returned from knee and ankle injuries that plagued him during the first half of this season but his form has been erratic, and his calamitous own goal set Tottenham on their way to a 4-0 thrashing by Liverpool on Sunday.

With his contract set to expire in June, the Daily Star are claiming that Kaboul is now ready to leave White Hart Lane and has supposedly already told friends he wants to make a move across north London to join fierce rivals Arsenal on a free transfer.

The French centre-back is understood to be best pals with Gunners midfielder Abou Diaby and with a number of other French players on the books at the Emirates, Kaboul would feel right at home.

Arsene Wenger is expected to be in the market for defensive reinforcements this summer, particularly if skipper Thomas Vermaelen leaves, but it would be a big surprise if he went in for the Spurs defender.

Obviously some will point out the similarities with Sol Campbell – who made a shock switch from Spurs to Arsenal in 2001 when his contract ran out – but let’s face it, Kaboul is no Campbell.

Campbell was regarded as one of the best centre-back’s in the Premier League, if not Europe, at the time and it was widely regarded as a major coup for Wenger when he managed to lure him to Highbury. However, should Kaboul make a similar move across North London, I’m not sure there will be the same excitement from the Arsenal faithful as there was when the Campbell deal was announced.

In some ways it would be a ‘typical Wenger’ signing. Kaboul is French, he’d be cheap, and he’s injured a lot (you can see why he’s friends with Diaby!), but with the Arsenal coffers now bursting with cash available for the manager to spend, Gunners fans are going to be demanding top quality signings, not freebie’s from their local neighbours.

So although Kaboul may be keen on joining his compatriots at Arsenal, I just don’t see it happening.
