Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is targeting five new signings at the end of the season after being handed at least £60m to spend this summer, according to the Mirror.

While the Merseysiders are still on course to claim their first league title in almost 25 years, they have already guaranteed at least a top-three finish meaning they can begin to prepare for life back in the Champions League next season.

Owner John Henry is so impressed with the progress made by Brendan Rodgers and his team this season that the Mirror claim he’ll hand the Northern Irishman at least £60m to spend this summer plus anything else he manages to raise from the sale of existing players.

Managing director Ian Ayre confirmed yesterday that the club now plans to push on and spend whats required to build a squad capable of mixing it with the best in Europe next year. Speaking after Sunday’s crucial 3-2 win at Norwich, Ayre said:

“What we achieved on Sunday was massive. This isn’t just about getting in the qualifiers [by finishing fourth] – we are guaranteed Champions League football. It is an unbelievable achievement from where we were.

“There is no question we always expected that the squad we need for next season will be very different to the squad that we have needed for this year when we were not playing in Europe. That has always been on the cards.

“We set out with an ambition to get into the Champions League, and now we are guaranteed third and we are determined to push on. It is all important for what we are trying to achieve.”

“It will cost what it costs when we decide who the manager wants to buy, but it has always been tougher in the transfer market when you are not competing at the highest level,”

“We had the issue with Luis [Suarez, who was chased by Arsenal] last summer because he wanted to play in the best games against the best players. That is always a factor.

“There is no question it opens up a few doors for us and makes it a little bit easier.

“Even when you step through that door though, there are still a lot of others trying to get the same players. You can’t trade on a name, absolutely. You get a little bit of that, but there is definitely a challenge. That’s the reality.” Ayre is quoted as saying by the Mirror.

It’s understood Rodgers will look to sell the likes of Pepe Reina, Sebastian Coates, Oussama Assaidi, Iago Aspas and Krisztian Adorjan, while he might also listen to offers for Daniel Agger and Jose Enrique, in order to try and raise extra money to fund his ambitious plans.

The newspaper suggests that Liverpool’s priority will be to renew their interest in Dnipro winger Yevhen Konoplyanka after they narrowly missed out on his signature during the January transfer window, and they will also make another attempt to sign Henrikh Mkhitaryan after missing out on him to Borussia Dortmund last summer.

While they are Rodgers two big-money targets in the attacking areas, the Reds boss will then look to bring in three defensive signings with Schalke’s Kyriakos Papadopoulos and Sporting Lisbon’s Marcos Rojo among those believed to be on his hit-list.

It’s certainly gearing up to be an exciting summer for Liverpool fans as they prepare to be thrust back into the big-time and there’s little doubt they will need to severely strengthen the squad in order to cope with the added rigor of playing mid-week European football again.

As well as adding to his squad, key for Rodgers should be to ensure they keep hold of their existing talent with clubs likely to be sniffing around several of the Liverpool squad after such an impressive campaign.

However, while transfer gossip can capture the imagination, the fans have more immediate issues at hand with the small matter of sealing the Premier League title starting with the visit of Chelsea to Anfield on Sunday afternoon, where victory would put the club within touching distance of lifting their first title in almost 25 years.
