Angel Di Maria Real Madrid

Arsenal have made contact with Real Madrid over the availability of €40m-rated Chelsea target Angel Di Maria, according to reports today.

The Gunners were strongly linked with the Argentinean attacker last summer and Madrid bosses were understood to be open to the idea of selling Di Maria but he ended up staying after making it clear he didn’t want to leave and Real coach Carlo Ancelotti vetoed his exit.

Arsene Wenger ended up signing team mate Mesut Ozil on transfer deadline day back in September but it seems he’s continued to monitor Di Maria’s progress this year and will no doubt have noted the 26-year-old’s mixed performances at the Bernabeu.

While Di Maria has chipped in with an impressive 11 goals and 21 assists in all competitions, it appears his performances have been affected by the signing of Gareth Bale, as the Welshman’s arrival has seen Di Maria deployed in a more central role where he’s struggled to perform on a consistent basis.

Many have suggested that the Argentinean international simply can’t fit into a system that includes both Bale and Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo and the Daily Star claims that Madrid supremo’s are now ready to cash in on the player if someone meet’s their €40m (£32m) asking price this summer.

The newspaper states that Arsenal have now joined long-term admirers Chelsea in the race to bring the player to the Premier League, while PSG and Monaco are also understood to be keen on luring the attacker to Ligue 1.

The Mirror also take a similar stance but they claim that Arsenal have already made contact with Madrid and suggest that the Spanish giants are ready to cut their losses, with a deal potentially being struck at nearer £25m.

It remains to be seen how much truth there is in these reports, but Di Maria would be an excellent signing if Arsenal or Chelsea could pull it off. He’s one of the most creative players in Europe and has consistently has a hand in over 25 goals per season.

He’s in the Argentinean squad for this summers World Cup and a star showing in Brazil is only going to increase the competition for his signature, so if he is being made available by Madrid at the end of the season, Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho may want to try and get a deal tied up quickly before the price gets driven up by a bidding war.

Wenger is expected to be in the market for attacking reinforcements this summer after the Gunners lack of depth saw them fall away during the closing stages of the title race, and Di Maria would offer him a wealth of options, plus bring a much-needed goal threat to the squad.

Mourinho on the other hand is well-stocked for attacking midfielders at Stamford Bridge but he may not be able to resist going for Di Maria if he’s on the market as he knows the player well from his time at Madrid and he’d be confident of getting the best out of him.

It’s going to be interesting to see how this story develops but I’d personally love to see Di Maria come to England and test himself in the Premier League, so fingers crossed one of the London giants manage to sign him this summer.
