Liverpool are one of eight clubs to have made approaches to Ashley Cole with the left-back confirming this morning that he looks set to leave Chelsea this summer, according to reports today.

Cole has enjoyed eight trophy-laden years at Stamford Bridge following his controversial move from Arsenal in 2006, with the 33-year-old winning the Champions League, Europa League, Premier League and four FA Cups during his time with the Blues.

However, he lost his place in Jose Mourinho’s starting eleven last season to Cesar Azpilicueta and managed to make just 17 appearances for the first team in all competitions, and the lack of regular action saw him retire from international football after being left out of Roy Hodgson’s 23-man England squad for the World Cup finals.

Cole’s contract is due to expire next month and it looks like he’s not been offered an extension by the Blues as he Tweeted that he’s weighing up his options and ‘sadly it does not look like Chelsea will be one of them’.

The left-back went on to say his goodbyes to the fans and thanked them for sticking by him before saying he’ll be ‘looking for another journey in my life’.

It doesn’t look like there is any shortage of interest with the Telegraph claiming that the player has eight offers on the table from clubs both here in the Premier League and abroad, with Liverpool and Real Madrid understood to be among those interested.

The experienced defender is believed to have gone on holiday to contemplate his future and although he’s already ruled out a move to the MLS, the newspaper suggests he’s not entirely dismissed the prospect of staying at Chelsea should they come back in with a tempting offer.

Personally, I think a move to Liverpool would be ideal for all parties. The Merseysiders are about to return to the Champions League again next year and Brendan Rodgers needs to add an experienced left-back to his squad this summer. A short-term move to Anfield would allow Cole at least another year at the big time while the Reds would get a reliable defender to compete with Jose Enrique and Jon Flanagan next season.

A switch to Liverpool would mean Cole having to move north but there would be plenty of familiar faces to help him settle with the defender knowing the likes of Steven Gerrard, Daniel Sturridge and Glen Johnson well.

Of course Cole may decide he wants to try and another league and if so, he is likely to jump at the chance of joining a club like Real Madrid. If he feels he can still compete at the very highest level then there aren’t many bigger challenges than the Spanish giants.
