Manchester United have sensationally pulled the plug on their record-breaking €75m move for Edinson Cavani due to the PSG strikers £300,000-a-week wage demands, according to reports today.

Cavani’s future has been the subject of much debate in recent months after he confirmed he’s not happy at having to play out on the wing to accommodate for Zlatan Ibrahimovich and he’s finding it difficult to fullfil his more defensive duties out wide.

The South American aired his grievances back in April and revealed that he plans to sit down with Paris Saint-Germain officials this summer to discuss his future. Cavani said:

“I have to give the best, regardless of the position. But no, it is not always easy,”

“I’m good in Paris, but there are some things that I’ll have to talk to the club about.

“Certain things should be done differently. Today I defend a lot, I have another idea of what my role in the team should be.

“As an attacker I am used to finishing attacks and scoring and today I must perform other tasks. No, it is not easy, it’s true.

“I do not want to talk about sacrifice, because I am happy putting the effort in. But today I hold a more defensive role than before.

“I am more like a defender and it is more difficult because, when I arrived, I had other ideas.”

“The Premier League? I like it. Was my my agent in London in February? I do not know, honestly.” Cavani is quoted as saying by ESPN

These comments led to speculation he could be set for a move this summer just 12 months after making a £54m switch from Napoli, and it was possible that PSG could cash in due to their problems meetings UEFA’s Financial Fair Play guidelines.

Manchester United were reportedly ready to test PSG’s resolve with a British record €75m (£60m) bid over the coming weeks with Cavani believed to be keen on making the switch to the Premier League.

The Daily Star are reporting that although the 27-year-old is reluctant to join a club not in the Champions League, he has informed United he would be willing to join them if they offered him the same £300,000-a-week wage that striker Wayne Rooney is now on.

However, it seems the Uruguayan is unlikely to move to Old Trafford as the newspaper states that Louis van Gaal and vice Chairman Ed Woodward are not willing to meet his demands and have now pulled the plug on the proposed move to concentrate on other targets.

This deal was always going to be hugely expensive for the club and it appears the record-breaking transfer fee combined with sky-high wages have proven too much for United to handle, and you can’t really blame them for pulling out. Especially when you consider Cavani is now 27 and he would have very little sell-on value in few years.

Van Gaal is expected to be busy in the transfer market this summer as he looks to rebuild a squad that finished a disappointing seventh last season, but I was always surprised that a striker was a priority. With Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie already on the books, it seems to me that another striker is probably the last thing they need, so the €75m would be much better spent in strengthening other areas such as defence and midfield.
