Liverpool have admitted defeat in their pursuit of Alexis Sanchez after being informed the Barcelona attacker has opted to join Arsenal, according to the Liverpool Echo.

Sanchez has been one of the most sought-after players so far this summer after Barca made it clear they were willing to let the Chilean international leave as he’s not considered an important part of new boss Luis Enrique’s first team next season.

Arsenal and Liverpool have been battling it out to convince the 25-year-old to come to the Premier League over Serie A champions Juventus – who have also been desperate to lure the attacker to Italy.

Some reports in recent days have suggested the player was leaning towards north London and it appears that’s now the case as the Liverpool Echo are claiming that Liverpool have been forced to end their pursuit of Sanchez after being informed he will be joining rivals Arsenal instead.

The newspaper suggests that both clubs met Barcelona’s £30m asking price but after contemplating his future over the weekend, Sanchez’s representatives told the Merseysiders today that the player and his family would prefer to live in London.

If this turns out to be the case, then it will be a major blow to Liverpool as Brendan Rodgers looks to try and rebuild his squad to cope with the imminent departure of star striker Luis Suarez – who is set to join Barcelona.

However, the signing of Sanchez will be a major coup for Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger and add a real goal threat to the north Londoners squad, as the he scored 21 goals and provided 15 assists last season. He’s also able to play out wide or through the middle – as he did for Chile to good effect at the World Cup – so he’ll provide Wenger with plenty of options in the final third next season.

We’ll have to see how this develops over the coming days but unless something drastic happen, all signs are pointing to Sanchez joining Arsenal this summer.
