Chelsea are on the verge of signing Filipe Luis with reports today claiming the Brazilian defender is set to undergo a medical in London ahead of a £20m move from La Liga champions Atletico Madrid.

The Blues have been strongly linked with a move for Luis this summer with Jose Mourinho identifying him as a replacement for Ashley Cole after the veteran joined Roma on a free transfer earlier this month.

So far, the two clubs have struggled to agree a fee with reports suggesting that Chelsea were only prepared to pay around £15m for the 28-year-old, which fell short of Madrid’s asking price as they were holding out for the players £20m buy-out clause.

However, the Telegraph announced that Chelsea had reopened talks over the weekend and it appears the west Londoners have now agreed to pay the full value of the defender’s buy-out fee as the Express claim Luis is set to undergo a medical in London ahead of a £20m switch to Stamford Bridge.

If true, it would be yet another top class addition to the Chelsea squad following on from the acquisitions of Cesc Fabrgeas and Diego Costa earlier in the summer, and Mourinho will have added another superb player to his already formidable-looking squad ahead of the new season.

Luis has been excellent for Atletico over the past few years and was virtually ever-present in helping Diego Simeone’s side land the La Liga title last season and narrowly miss out on the Champions League after losing to Real Madrid in the final.

The reported £20m fee is certainly a lot of money to pay for a full-back who’s almost 29, but he’ll bring with him plenty of experience and that’s going to be vital when you consider he’ll be replacing a veteran like Ashley Cole.
