Man Utd Told £40m Target Is Available For Transfer As Club Talk Up ‘Big Signings’

Louis van Gaal is keen to push through a deal for Angel Di Maria after Manchester United were told by Real Madrid they can buy the £40m-rated winger.

The summer transfer window is now open for business and it’s expected to be a busy few weeks as managers strengthen their squads ahead of next season, so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Man Utd are told they can buy Angel Di Maria.

Angel Di Maria Real Madrid

Louis van Gaal is keen to push through a deal for Angel Di Maria after Manchester United were told by Real Madrid they can buy the £40m-rated winger this summer, according to reports.

United have been strongly linked with Di Maria in recent weeks with speculation suggesting the Argentinean attacker is unsettled at the Bernabeu and could be on the move despite helping the club lift the Champions League last season.

The Red Devils have now received a major boost with the Express reporting that Madrid have informed the club that Di Maria has now been made available for transfer after they wrapped up the £63m signing of Colombian international James Rodriguez.

The La Liga giants have also added German World Cup winner Toni Kroos to their ranks this summer, so it appears Carlo Ancelotti no longer sees a place for Di Maria in his squad and United could be the ones that benefit.

The newspaper suggests that Louis van Gaal is keen to push forward with a deal for the 26-year-old winger and it’s understood United will step up their pursuit after their two-week pre-season tour of the USA.

While the Dutchman seemingly wants to add Di Maria to his squad, he also wants to assess his current crop of players first before making any firm decisions over new recruits this summer.

Di Maria would certainly be a major coup if United could pull it off and he’d bring a huge amount of creativity to the team, with the player contributing an impressive 11 goals and 26 assists last season, and 36 goals and 87 assists in his 189 appearances for Madrid during his four years at the club.

Understandably the attacker is not going to come cheap and the Express claim it’s likely to take £40m to land him, but that shouldn’t be a problem for United as vice-chairman Ed Woodward revealed last night that the club have the financial capability to spend up to £80m on a single player if they wanted and insisted they can make ‘big signings’ despite not being able to offer Champions League football.

“Of course, it is within the club’s capabilities to spend £60m, £70m, £80m on a player – and we would not be afraid to do that,” Woodward said.

“There is no budget. We are in a very strong financial position. We can make big signings.”

Those are some big words from Woodward and they will certainly excite United fans, but perhaps it would have been more prudent to play down the amount of money the club have got in their coffers as they might now find that their targets will cost a few extra million when they get around the negotiating table.

United have already splashed out on Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw this summer and the spending doesn’t look like it will stop any time soon, and I’m sure United fans will be desperate for the club to push the boat out to make Di Maria their third big signing of the transfer window. Will it happen? We’ll have to wait and see…
