Arsenal & Liverpool To Miss Out On Targets As Pochettino Closes In On Double Swoop
Tottenham could be set to disappoint Arsenal and Liverpool with reports claiming they are closing in on a double swoop for Morgan Schneiderlin and Jay Rodriguez
The summer transfer window is now open for business and it’s expected to be a busy few weeks as managers strengthen their squads ahead of next season, so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Tottenham could be set to deny Arsenal and Liverpool.
Tottenham Hotspur could be set to disappoint Arsenal and Liverpool with reports this evening claiming they are closing in on a double swoop for Morgan Schneiderlin and Jay Rodriguez.
The Gunners have been strongly linked with a move for Schneiderlin in recent weeks as Arsene Wenger looks to bring in a long-term replacement for Mikel Arteta in the middle of the park.
Reports just last week claimed that Arsene Wenger had offered the French international a lucrative contract in the hope that better wages and the promise of Champions League football would be enough to lure him to the Emirates ahead of their North London rivals.
However, widespread reports this evening claim that Tottenham are now closing in on Schneiderlin’s signature as part of a double swoop on Southampton, with the 24-year-old believed to be keen on being reunited with former boss Maouricio Pochettino at White Hart Lane.
Schneiderlin was recently quoted as praising the Argentine, calling him a great coach and good man.
“With the quality Tottenham have, Mauricio Pochettino will get the best out of each player.
“He came in and made Southampton play and now Tottenham have a great future.
“He improved me very much. He improved the whole squad and improved me as a player. He’s a great coach and good man.” Schneiderlin is quoted as saying by Goal
So Spurs look like they are set to get one over their fierce rivals and they could also disappoint Liverpool with the Daily Mail suggesting that Pochettino is also close to securing a deal for striker Jay Rodriguez.
The England forward is currently on the sidelines with an anterior cruciate ligament injury that he picked up towards the end of last season but that hasn’t stopped him attracting interest from the upper echelons of the Premier League.
Reports earlier on Monday claimed that Liverpool has turned their attention to the 24-year-old as Brendan Rodgers looked for an alternative to Loic Remy after pulling out of a deal for the Queens Park Rangers striker on Sunday.
Rodriguez netted 15 league goals last season and was on course to being named in the England squad for the World Cup finals before injury ruled him out. However, he could be set for a big-money move with the Mail quoting the Press Association as saying that both he and Schneiderlin are close to joining Tottenham in a sensational double deal.
If true, they would be the latest players to depart Southampton in what’s becoming an exodus the likes of which have never been seen before. The South Coast club have already sold Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Dejan Lovren to Liverpool, Luke Shaw has joined Manchester United while Calum Chambers secured his move to Arsenal this afternoon, so it would take the number to seven first team players should Rodriguez and Schneiderlin join the quintet in heading for the exit door at St Mary’s.
The good news for new boss Ronald Koeman is he has plenty of funds to reinvest in the squad, but with less than three weeks until the start of the season kicks off, the Dutchman is running out of time to rebuild his flagging squad and the first team is going to be unrecognisable from the side that secured an impressive eighth-placed finish last season.
