Liverpool kick off the new Premier League season when they take on Southampton at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

Ahead of the game, boss Brendan Rodgers has been speaking at his pre-match press conference this afternoon and he’s given Liverpoolfc.com an injury update including the latest on the fitness of Adam Lallana, Lazar Markovic, Jon Flanagan and Daniel Agger.

Rodgers confirmed that Flanagan is still in rehabilitation while summer signing Lallana is also progressing well after picking up a knee injury during pre-season training at the end of July. The duo are expected to step up their recoveries and return to full training next Monday.

Attacker Markovic – who joined the Merseysiders from Benfica earlier in the summer – missed last weekends win over Borussia Dortmund with a tendon injury but Rodgers says that although the Serbian youngster wont be available for the visit of Southampton, he isn’t expected to be out for too much longer as he’s ‘doing well’.

The only other absentee this weekend is Agger as the defender continues to nurse a knee injury, but the Danish international would probably not have featured anyway as he’s expected to secure a move away from Anfield before the end of the month after dropping down the pecking order.

Here’s what Rodgers told the clubs official website:

“Young Jon Flanagan is still in rehab, but coming along very well,”

“Adam Lallana is looking very well. Those two will probably start training with the group in the week beginning with Manchester City.”

“Young Markovic is still unavailable this weekend but doing very well.”

“Daniel Agger has had an ongoing injury so he is unavailable; apart from that, everyone else is fine.”

Liverpool will be hoping to continue their fine late-season form from last year and kick off the new campaign in style against the Saints, and despite missing these four players, they should still have enough to see off the South Coast club at home.

What do you think the starting line-up should be now you’ve seen the team news?
