Arsenal sent scouts to watch Wolfsburg midfielder Luiz Gustavo and Borussia Dortmund attacker Marco Reus this weekend as Arsene Wenger prepares to makes some late moves in the transfer market, according to reports today.

We’ve signed four players so far this summer but we desperately need to bring in another centre-back and a defensive midfielder before the end of the month, while many fans also feel we require a top class forward if we’re to be considered genuine title contenders this season.

Greek international defender Kostas Manolas has been strongly linked with a move to the Emirates in recent days so he could be coming in to add depth to the back-four and it looks like Wenger is also widening his search for new recruits in other areas.

The Mirror are reporting today that Arsenal sent scouts to keep an eye on long-term target Luiz Gustavo during Wolfsburg’s 2-1 defeat away at Bayern Munich on Friday night and is now contemplating a late move for the Brazilian international.

We were linked with Gustavo last summer but he opted for a switch to Germany after we failed to give his assurances over how much first team football he’d get at the Emirates. However, with Mikel Arteta entering the twilight of his career and Mathieu Flamini failing to establish himself as a regular, the boss would surely now promise Gustavo a regular spot in the first team if he made the move this time around.

I think he’d be an excellent addition and we could even pick him up for a reasonable fee as the newspaper suggests that Wolfsburg are keen on Lukas Podolski, so a player-plus-cash swap deal could be on the cards.

Podolski’s future is uncertain and talk of a move was fuelled after he was left out of the squad to face Everton on Saturday, so it could make sense for us to use the German as bait to try and land Gustavo.

While Wenger’s priority is to bring in a centre-back and defensive midfielder, the boss could be lining-up a surprise move to bring in a forward as the Mirror also claim that Arsenal sent scouts to keep an eye on Marco Reus this weekend as Dortmund lost 2-0 at home to Bayer Leverkusen.

Reus has only just come back from a serious injury but got 76 minutes under his belt as Jurgen Klopp’s men got the new campaign off to a disappointing start. While a move away from the Westfalenstadion seems unlikely at this late stage, perhaps Wenger is eyeing him as a potential replacement for Podolski should the 29-year-old leave this summer?

In an ideal world, we’d use Podolski to land Gustavo then bring Reus in to replace the German. That would be some sensational business by Arsenal if we could somehow pull it off as both Gustavo and Reus are world class players who’d make a huge difference to the team, but it’s also highly unlikely to happen. Gustavo could be a possibility but Reus is much more likely to leave Dortmund next summer.

Either way, it’s certainly going to be an interesting final week in the transfer window and it looks like we’re going to see Wenger making a few late moves in the market, let’s just hope he addresses the areas we need strengthened as we’re so close to having a title-winning squad.
